Southport, NC

About 45 minutes North of Sunset Beach, this small boating town is filled with antique shops to browse, boats to watch, and good places to eat. A Maritime Museum is located in town as well. A nice half day trip is a visit to Beach Head Island out of Southport. You reach it via a ferry and can tour North Carolina's oldest lighthouse, among other sites on the island.

Wilmington, NC

This historic sea port features waterfront shops and restaurants. It is known as a gateway to Cape Fear Coast beaches like Wrightsville, with its strong surf, and Carolina, with its long boardwalk. Part of downtown’s Historic District, the Riverwalk is lined with restaurants, galleries and shops. It runs along the Cape Fear River, where the Battleship North Carolina is moored. Artifacts on the ship explore WWII naval combat history.
