Bird Island = FREE Family Fun

Off the west end of Sunset Beach lies a paradise still undeveloped, but enjoyed by many. I'm sure you've heard of the Kindred Spirit mailbox, but have you actually taken the time to walk to it? Bird Island is another simple pleasure that you can enjoy this year while on vacation in Sunset Beach.

It seems every time I walk down that familiar stretch of strand, I experience something different. A few nights ago, I completed my tenth walk to the mailbox, while my girlfriend saw it for the first time. It was pretty nice getting away from "reality," being the only ones walking on Bird Island at the time. Although we didn't see many sand dollars, in which normally you'd find several, we did see hundreds of crabs. Juanita loved it, and is already begging to go back on a walk to Bird Island.

While in town this year, make plans to take the family on a walk to Bird Island if you haven't done so already. You may run into several crabs as well, or whole sand dollars, deer, geckos, dolphins, or other wild life. Take your beach chairs and a cooler along to enjoy the whole day on the beach - you definitely won't have the crowds that normally gather on the beach near the center of the island.
