Sunset Beach - North Carolina's

Brunswick County is home to some of the nicest beaches in the Carolinas. Sunset Beach is the southern-most barrier island in North Carolina, and one of the four pristine beaches that make up the south Brunswick islands. It provides a quaint natural beauty that has been attracting families to its coastline since the 50s. Many families can contest that their Sunset Beach vacation has become a tradition through many generations.

With its zoning limitations on both building height and number of bedrooms, Sunset Beach is graciously stripped of high rise condominiums, commercialization, and day to day traffic that you find at nearby resort towns. Its the beauty and serenity of a classic beach town that draws seasonal visitors. Check in to your own vacation home and relax on the beach with your family for the rest of your vacation. Our beach strand is perfect for any beach activities, such as surfing, frisbee, kite flying, or building that one-of-a-kind sand castle. Hunt for shells or enjoy a delicious picnic by the ocean.

The comfortable sub-tropical climate in Sunset Beach makes it a great place to visit anytime from spring through fall. Youll experience warm air and ocean temperatures perfect for a day on the beach. During the peak summer months, a gentle breeze makes the heat bearable for all ages. Dont forget your beach cabanas and umbrellas for extra shade.

There are bountiful activities in and around Sunset Beach. Specialty shops and seafood restaurants dot the mainland along with a few attractions to keep the family entertained. Spend an afternoon at the Ingram Planetarium in town or the Museum of Coastal Carolina in neighboring Ocean Isle Beach for a hands-on learning experiences. The bright lights, shopping centers, and amusements of South Carolinas Grand Strand lay just a short drive down the highway from our area. Wilmington is located a hour to the North.

Off Sunset Beachs west end is Bird Island, an undeveloped stretch of coastline owned by the State of North Carolina as a coastal reserve. Since the island is an extension off of Sunset Beachs shoreline, this is a popular place to walk and absorb all the natural beauty and wildlife that has been preserved through the years. Lots of sand dollars and shells can be found on the quarter-mile walk. Stop by the Kindred Spirit mailbox to drop a line or a poem for others to read while visiting this sacred place.

Sunset Beach is home to one of the last operating swing bridges in our state. The one lane bridge is the only way onto and off the island, which opens to intracoastal waterway boat traffic on the top of every hour. This has served as a gateway to the precious island community throughout the islands development. A modern, fixed-span bridge is being constructed now to replace this bridge by the end of 2010, which will allow for an uninterrupted flow of traffic onto and off the island.

Although many new visitors have discovered Sunset Beach, it is still hailed as North Carolinas best kept secret. It is hard to find a vacation spot that is so relaxing and naturally satisfying than our little island. It is only three miles long and doesnt have all the fancy amenities of a big resort, but provides a lifetime of great family memories.
